Good Morning America went pink on October 1, 2014 to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicating pretty much an entire show to the cause. Two of the show’s co-anchors, Robin Roberts and Amy Robach, have each battled a form of the disease.

The show marked the one year anniversary that Robach got a mammogram live for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That mammogram, which Roberts urged Robach to do on air, led to follow up tests which revealed Robach indeed had cancer. Robach agreed to do the segment live thinking that if it helped save one live it would be worth it. She said it never occurred to her that that life would be her own. Robach underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in battling the disease.
Roberts was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer in 2007. She endured surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments to overcome the disease.
Topics on the GMA Goes Pink episode included preventative surgery, BRCA mutation testing, and dense breast which obscure mammograms requiring additional testing. Preventative surgery based on a high hereditary risk of developing breast cancer has increased since actress Angelina Jolie announced her double mastectomy last year. This increase in testing and surgeries has been dubbed the Angelina Jolie Effect.
