Experimenting with Encaustic Art

Ivy Newport's avatar

Hi there! How are you? We have been pretty good over here. Enjoying the beautiful Spring blossoms everywhere and the more frequent sun breaks too!

Maybe it’s the Spring energy or the fact that I’ve started the second part to the Brené Brown online class but I’m feeling inspired! I have been wanting to try encaustic art forever but I’ve always been a bit intimidated by all that comes with it.

Well…this week I finally dove right in! I ordered my encaustic medium, a heated palette (mini griddle), hake brushes, encaustic boards and a heat gun. While waiting for it all, I devoured this book and watched every youtube video on encaustic that I could find.  Yesterday, it all arrived on my doorstep and I was like a kid at Christmas! All smiles, clapping my hands and doing a little jig. I was that excited. Dorky but…

Tamar Braxton’s Voice

(by Deleesa Hunter)

Tamar Braxton’s voice has been on my mind lately, so I’m glad I got the chance to finally write about it. Tamar Braxton is the star of reality hit reality series Braxton Family Values and the spin-off Tamar and Vince. She also just happens to have an amazing singing voice. There is so much about her voice that I just LOVE, while there are some things she does with her voice that I am not a fan of. I will explore all of these points in this blog.

What I love about her voice is the clarity, weight, agility and timbre. Tamar’s voice, especially in the upper register, reminds me of a horn. As she ascends in her range her voice gets more resonant and freer. It’s almost as if her voice is relieved to finally hit an f5. It’s a very light voice which allows her to move very freely, again, mostly in her upper chest register. She is a true coloratura soprano. Unfortunately it takes her a while to get to the freedom she achieves in her high notes. Most times it doesn’t happen until the very end of the song. Why is this? Aren’t lower notes, by default, easier to sing  than high notes? Not necessarily. Continue reading Tamar Braxton’s Voice

the floacist 2
Years ago, a group by the name of Floetry captivated our minds, hearts, and eardrums with the combination of poetry, spoken word, and mesmerizing singing. Yet, when Floetry disbanded in 2007, Marsha Ambrosius went for the R&B spotlight, whereas Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart stayed true to her Neo-Soul, poetic style. Now, just a couple of weeks away from the release of her third solo album Rise Of The Phoenix Mermaid , The Floacist is feeling as free and content with herself than ever before, coming to grips with the thought that everything happens for a reason. I must say I have never left a conversation with someone feeling so inspired, but after talking with The Floacist, her positive energy and spirit resonated with me in a way I’ve never experienced before, and I hope you all feel that energy after listening and/or reading my interview with her below!
